No such thing as "the best water filter". Also, cheaper filter usually means bad water quality and need to change filters much too often (i.e. higher cost of operation).
Here’s how to approach it. First, see how much you can spend, and second see which type of filter you want. Here’s filter types:
1. Faucet. These are generally worst kinds of filters because they hold very small filter cartridges (limited weight and space). They also are often a pain because they fall off. The only one I can recommend is Crystal Quest (see links below). Filter life 6-12 months.
2. Pitchers. There are many, they are a notch above faucets in water quality.
Brita and PUR a bad, they are a cheap charcoal filter with a taste enhancing media, that will grow mold if you don’t change them after 2 months. So you will spend lots and lots of $ on filter cartridges. Instead, I recommend a 4-stage Pitcher from Crystal Quest – a Consumer Digest Best Buy for 2006 and 2007 (see below).
3. Counter Top filters. Here your choice is better, you can get a system with multi-layered cartridge, or with multiple cartridges. Generally, the more stages and larger the cartridges – the better the system. A modern system will typically have a Carbon Block, a KDF and Ion Exchange filters (or stages). Filter life is also 6-12 months.
4. Under sink systems. There are the best out of all 4 choices above, because you can actually put a fairly good system under the sink. Lots of options and different costs here, including Reverse Osmosis systems (not the best from a health standpoint, but best filtration). If you have enough space under the sink, you are only going to see a faucet, no extra space is occupied.
