Filtering chlorine from my tap water?

by admin

I am going to make some home brew beer, and because chlorine kills bacteria which means it will kill the yeast, I need chlorine free water(about 6 gallons). Any suggestions on the best way to remove most if not all chlorine from my regular tap water?

An activated carbon filter does a great job for this purpose. The bacteria (if any) will be destroyed in the boil. What you really want to avoid is the chlorophenols (poly phenols) and or possible the chlorophenols.

  1. Your tap water does not contain nearly enough chlorine to kill yeast – however, the chlorine can give your beer a slight off flavor.

The best way is to run the water through a charcoal filter like a Brita.

I personally just buy all of my water for beer making – it’s just easier and 5 gallons of spring water at the supermarket isn’t much.

  2. You are going to boil the water before making beer, aren’t you? Boiling will drive the chlorine from the water. Alternatively, you could allow the water to sit for a day before you use it.
