I’m looking for a good water filter for home use. What brand would you recommend and why?

The tap water has been treated chemically and still has a high mineral content from going through the system. At times it
has a brown tinge.

Have you tried Brita?

  3. Check with a company like Servisoft or Culligan. They install a large filter for your drinking water supply and it results in a great improvement. Ours is in the basement and goes directly to the refrigerator door, although you can get a separate faucet for the sink.

For washing and bathing, a water softener is a good idea. It might not get rid of the color but it will take out the minerals. There are two major types; one uses a replaceable salt and the other a cartridge containing small beads of an ion exchange resin. You or the company can service the salt kind but the company periodically exchanges the resin cartridge for a fresh one. The kind with salt uses either sodium or potassium chloride. If you are going to drink it or cook with it and are concerned about an increase of sodium in your water, use the potassium kind. If you want no added minerals at all, get the ion exchange cartridge.

There is another option. Use a 5 gallon bottled water dispenser or have a metal tank put on a stand behind the house or other convenient place and a spigot installed above the kitchen sink. A water company will periodically come and refill it. I think they generally hold about 100 gallons.

If your water is that bad, it’s worth the extra cost. The softener also helps protect your pipes, appliances, and saves on laundry and dishwashing detergent.

  4. If you just want one to put on the faucet that you drink from I recommend Pur. I did house cleaning for a woman who lived outside of town and had well water. Her water smelled and you couldn’t drink it because it was brown. She put the filter on and it no longer smelled or was brown. You can also buy a pitcher for your frig. My in-laws have one because they thought they had too much chemials in their town water and you can see in the filter that they are removing what they don’t want to drink out of ther faucet.
As for one for your whole water system check at your local home repair store or local plumber.
