depends on the micron level you are trying to filter out., at the pet store you can get filters from 1000 microns to 50 microns, the lesser the microns the more refined the water after filtering,

coffe filters are good for about 20 to 50 microns depending on brand.

if you are also looking to remove chemicals and smells and gases, use active charcol

you have to know something about particle size to answer this. a sieve will filter out particles down to a certain size. cheese cloth will do so down to a certain particle size. heck, if the particles are 3 in gravel rock, wire mesh will filter them out
