I would like to hear your experiences with drinking water. What type have you found to be safest, most thirst quenching and best tasting? I avoid tap because I rent an old home with nasty pipes. And I don’t know if any of the filter pitchers, purifiers, etc. can overcome that? I don’t have money to pay a lot. I drink plastic gallons of what is labeled as spring water. But it says reverse osmosis is used. Not sure what to make of that. Causes bitter and metallic taste in my mouth, plus upsets my stomach.

So if you don’t have money then doing bottled water makes absolutely no sense at all. That is the most expensive route you could have chosen.

Spring water is less regulated than the water provided to us. OK so it may be filtered to clean out sediment and improve that clarity and color. But just because it is taken from the ground does not make it better. Talk to people who have well water for their homes. It is often worse than treated municipal water.

Mineral content in water varies in not only amounts but exactly what minerals are in it from city to city, state to state, country to country. Counting on water for our mineral intake is the most ridiculous thing I ever hear some of these folks say. We should be getting water from our water and our minerals from our foods and supplementation. PERIOD. If there’s minerals in the water, fine, but that should not be where we focus on attaining them.

You want good water inexpensively? Use an eSpring. It is the highest rated system available. Check Consumer reports, the Water Quality Association and the NSF International for verification. The only thing that can get water cleaner is a distillery. Even though it is the best system it actually costs less per gallon than basic filter systems like Pur and Britta which are in turn less expensive than bottled water. It is also far easier as you don’t have to buy and transport the bottles and recycle them like a responsible citizen should.

we currently use brita filter for our drinking water…i heard that the filter placed on sink is much more effective

The best home drinking filter is the one that will be independently certified systems. Most of Brita filters are NSF-certified but if you are more than two people in a family, it’s better to go for a countertop or undersink filter. Also, compare the cost of replacement filters because the price of a filter may be low initially but the cost of annual replacement filters can be high. In addition, you want to know what’s in your water before you buy because you don’t want to go for a famous filter if it cannot resolve your water problems.

If you really want to compare "apples to apples," you may use the excel spreadsheet located at http://www.waterfilters-camping-water-purifier.com/compare-water-filters.html

Reading some of the stuff that is found in tap water and believe it is time to invest in a water treatment system with maybe a bladder. Don’t get me wrong, I like tap water and am grateful for it. I just want to get the best out of it. Not to sure on specifics for filtration. I use a Pure pitcher filter now which is carbon I think. Looking for a system I can use with current or next to sink faucet. Filtration along the lines of all bad stuff. Lead, chlorine, microbes, etc. I will continue looking, and thank you for help.

I’ve been using Aquasana for about 5 years and I like their products very much.

An activated carbon filter does a great job for this purpose. The bacteria (if any) will be destroyed in the boil. What you really want to avoid is the chlorophenols (poly phenols) and or possible the chlorophenols.

home use is much more down scale than big plants so keep it simple.

My small home town is located nearby kaveri river, the drinking water from municipality stored in a giant water tank and supplied to home. I believe that this water tank is not clean enough and often chlorine was added to get them clean.

I want to buy a water filter mainly to get rid of chlorine and any bacteria. I gone through several information, but having lots of confusion that which is suitable filter for my home drinking water.

Here’s my understanding and question.

UV filter: Since kaveri water is exposed always to sun light, is it necessary to have UV filter? or it’s necessary that the water gets contaminated while stored at giant water tank?

RO: Reverse osmosis is known for the best filtration? but this one removes all the minerals from water which is necessary for our body. or the minerals from other sources like food is sufficient for our body?

Just get a PUR filter that attaches to your drinking faucet or under the sink or something simple. It’ll take care of any sediment in the water and chlorine too. Don’t really need a UV filter for water IMO.

We just bought a new (actually, very, very old) home. It has a 50 foot well. The water is hard, minerally, and discolored. Although it did pass the test, It tastes terrible, looks orangish and I’m pretty sure… its not healthy. Whats worse is that its probably going to clog up the screens in the facets and such.

I’m thinking we should get some kind of whole house water filtration system that at least removes the big sediments and such, and then we can get something like reverse osmosis just for drinking water. I heard they have an alternative to the water softener. Anyone know about that??

Basically, whatever we get… we don’t want to be replacing filters every 10 days, or throwing bags and bags of salt into it.

i don’t know for sure but an activated charcoal filter should help out a lot. they may lots of different filters and the normal one is a rope wound type and that will take lots of minerals out but i’m not sure about hard water. they make water softeners that will remove some hard water and once i had to use what is called an iron out filter that used a chemical called potassium permanganate and you had to recharge it about once a month. took a few hours to do and if yo got the chemical on you it took days to get the dark blue/purple off your skin. these are the only filters i know that may work for you. or check with a company that does water treatments like culligan. good luck.

I answered an interesting question earlier today about the "best" counter-top water filter. She said that she was disappointed with the consumer-available units and I suggested a Milli-Q system. It’s transportable, lightweight, and makes great water. My best buddy said that I was insane for posting that. Here’s the original question:
