I bought an under the counter reverse osmosis system from Home Depot for $169.00 and it works great!!!! Was simple to install, has a separate faucet for the 'good' water, a battery operated (like a wrist watch battery) light that lets you know when to change the filters and it very east to use, change filters and gives you water that taste as good as any bottled water you can buy! We have very hard water here in Texas so I also installed a water softener. They work so well together! I have wonderful water for bathing, washing clothes and cooking too!I don't have to use much soap for dishes , bathing or laundry! My whites are really white and my colors don't fade! The water softener was about $600.00 but it's saving my money in the long run on soap, softener, shampoo, conditioner and keeping my clothing brighter! No dingy lingering soap scum on the shower, bath tub or sinks! My hot water heater isn't going through the heating elements like it did before either! I save the
old gallon size milk jugs, washed them out good and just keep refilling them with water and always have good cold clean great tasting water!
References :
Portable? Something like this?

http://www.clear2o.com/

I've used it before at a relatives house and it seems pretty good. It can take a little while for the water to go through the filter, though. Not too long, just a little inconvenient if you want it immediately. Changing the filter isn't hard, either.
References :
Reverse osmosis water is the best kind of water. Carbon filters only remove sediments, but reverse osmosis water takes out all of the dissolved chemicals i.e. chlorine or fluoride.

They can come in 3 to even 5 stages. Maybe even more!

I myself have a 5 stage "RO" filter. It tastes great as well, which is a benefit!
References :
My son had a slightly high level of lead in his blood and we tested the house but couldn't find the source. We concluded that it must be the water pipes so we did some research to find the best water filter available.

We settled on the a ceramic gravity filter. Basicly it's a stainless steel canister that has a top and bottom chamber. The ceramic "candle" filters are contained in the top chamber which you fill with water . Gravity pushes the water through the ceramic "candles" and into the bottom chamber.
It is similar to natural spring water that is filtered through limestone in a mountain. It filters out all the chemicals, parasites, bacteria, etc. but leaves the minerals that are good for you.

Supposedly the filters are so good that you can put pond water in them and it will come out drinkable. They use these filters in third world countries where the water quality is questionable. They have been around since the 1800's I think.

The two biggest brands are British Berkefeld and Doulton. I don't want to be confused with an advertiser so I won't say which one I went with but they are both excellent.

My son was tested several months after drinking the filtered water only and the lead level in his blood dropped to normal levels. He was also taking heavy metal detox drops (cilantro and algea were the main ingredients), so whether it was the filter, the drops or both I can't say 100%, but I'm pretty sure it was a combination of the two but mainly the filter.
References :
Brita works fine with me.

There are some water filter spouts for your tap too, buy them at home depot or something I heard they work wonders~

You should go for an R.O. ( Reverse Osmosis) system.
Brita also makes it.

I have tried all sorts of filters but I am currently using RO from Brita. (In India it is a JV, Usha Brita, in fact)

The disadvantage of Brita Pitcher was that you had to manually fill it in and make sure that you tightly place the gasket and lid after filling in. But it was a nice stuff since it used to work without power and also in the absence of running water supply.
In RO you need to have power to operate and running water with sufficient pressure to get its tank fill. But I don't need to monitor it for water level in the tank, it automatically fills in.

Not to mention R.O. is currently the best technology to filter and softem the water at the moment.

Outlet tap of any kind of filter can go bad but can be replaced.
References :
It depends on what type of water you have and what it is going to be used for. If you want a whole house systems there are options like ion filteration or a watersoftener or iron filter.

If you are talking about consumption you have distilled water, Dioinized water or reverse Osmosis. The latter is the most inexpensive!
References :
I work at a water purification store

To be honest i don't think theres much difference between tap water and bottled water, theres a slight difference between jug filtered water, however theres a special water filter system that you can buy to connect onto your water pipe and the water that passes through it get filtered and my mum swares it tastes nicer and it supposedly filters out what isnt neccessary, You can buy these off the internet and they have their own special little tap which sits at the side of your normal tap :D

Most of our tap water (as long as it's not well water) has fluoride in it. This is important for your child's teeth. If you end up using a water w/o fluoride, consult your dentist for a supplement you can him.
