I want one that I can put on the counter in my kitchen that purifies my water. I dont want to drink anymore of the chemicals in the tap water such as fluoride and all those toxins in there.I want purest of the purest water. Thanks.

To get rid of things like fluoride, you need a reverse osmosis filter. Not sure that you can get these as a counter-top filter though.

Search the internet. You can buy them online. In Australia, they cost about $500. These are under-the-bench models that you need to properly install.

EDIT: The standard water filters, like Britta, will not remove any chemicals from your water. They will remove any suspended particles, and anything with a carbon filter should help sterilise the water. Fluoride can only be removed by a reverse osmosis filter.

EDIT 2: Again, if you want to remove things like toxins and fluoride, you need the reverse osmosis filter. None of the other filters will remove these.

It woud be great if we could have water with both these removed and the natural minerals still in. But that is called rain water, and only collected out of urban areas.

Is this true and if so, what about those home water filter units that you filter tap water yourself like brita or Pur, do those cut out the minerals as well?

Tap water is often more healthier as well because cities add things to it such as flouride, and because it’s publicly accessible, it needs to be tested regularly, and meet certain standards. I’m not too sure about the Brita or Pur filtering out minerals, but they do for sure change the water- you can tell in the taste. Those filters claim to remove harmful things that may be found in tap water, but because they use carbon as the filtering substance, the water that you’re left with will often have higher carbon levels than what you started with out of the tap.

I am looking into buying a water filter for kitchen tap. I gather you can put a system under the sink and run a separate tap.

Has anyone ever used such a system successfully? Or unsuccessfully for tht matter?

Is there a way I can try before I buy?

Thanks.

Water filtration systems come in three basic designs, ranked by their effectiveness.
1. Ionic, which uses electricity to remove the extra chemicals. Some labs to create distilled water out of tap water use this system.
2. Osmosis Filter’ which forces the water to move up through a filter leaving behind impurities.
3. Filter systems, which simply run the water through a filter.

Pure and Brita make several filter systems. Some attach to the sink faucet (which I installed myself and use) others are a filter in a pitcher.

Before paying all that money for a professionally installed system I would by the Brita Pitcher and try that out. If you notice a difference then you might want the more expensive system. However, once you sign the contract to install the expensive system you are stuck with it–there is no "try before you buy" policy.

Personally I do notice the taste difference.

I’m concerned by the amount of oil burned to truck and fly bottled water around the world so I would rather just drink tap water. What is the best installed water filter system that doesn’t leave the water with out minerals?

You do not need a water filter unless there are demonstrated, proven and frequent cases of disease communicated by your local water supply. For virtually everyone in North America, Australia, Japan, Russia, New Zealand, Europe and South Africa water filters are a glorious waste of money and resources. The sales are supported by a lot of advertising that implies health risks but does not actually say there are any. In short, they almost, but not quite, lie.

In fact domestic and office size water filters are dangerous to health because if the filter elements are not serviced or changed regularly they can change the odd bacterium that does get through the municipal system into a big colony right at your water tap.

No water filter that you can install at your home or in your office can remove metals in solution permanently. The most they can do is remove some of them until the activated carbon, if used, saturates and the metals go through anyway.

No municipal water supply in the countries I have just mentioned have dangerous levels of heavy metals unless you have a situation as set out in that Erin Brokovitch movie. In that case only reverse osmosis or distillation would be any good and that would cost a lot more than a filter. Like five or ten times more.

Don’t waste your money.

Edit -I stand (or sit) corrected on the metals issue, but I did say "unless you have a situation as set out in that Erin Brokovitch movie." However I still stand behind my main statements, these thing are promoted by what amount to lies and their capacity to absorb metals is limited.

Also, none of these brands state which type of filter they sell/use. Does anyone know which manufacturer sells purified, ceramic, or reverse osmosis filters?

Thanks!

I think you should know that most or all bottle water with filters come with activated carbon filters. Because of the way reverse osmosis (RO) works, I don’t think it can be used for a portable water filter. RO systems need pre- and post-filters with the RO filter in between. Also, the filter system usually comes with a storage tank.

If you want to know a good undersink RO filter, there no one better that the 5-stage Multi-Pure MP750 Plus RO (http://www.waterfilters-camping-water-purifier.com/Multi-Pure.html). It’s NSF-certified and very effective in reducing a lot of chemicals including arsenic.

Also, the reason the pitcher filters very slow is because 1) the pores are very small; 2) your water may be dirty and plugs the holes quickly.

Ones of the best bottle with filter is the Echo stainless steel water bottle which comes internal filter cartridge. It’s very popular and it’s also NSF-certified so you can be sure it’s effective in reducing contaminants.
